Distinct from many other traditional restaurants in Shanghai, Huma committed to using a contemporary expression to continue the historical taste. The concept reflects in both the design for dishes and space. They asked me to design a typographical identity with a very specific requirement：none trendy or traditional. After conducting a lot of researches in classical calligraphy work, I decided to use the official script(隶书) as my inspiration, which is ancient and classic, just like Yunnan food. The word “Niao” means bird, which can rarely be seen in people’s names. People have kept asking about the story of his name as the artist grew up. He proposed the reverse of his name as the theme of this exhibition, along with his iconic portrait. Tong’s artwork has always been remarked as camp-style; also, he’s always been keen on composing the feeling of pushing the boundary between harmony and abruptness. I set the three characters back and forth in the background, letting people interpret it as either the artist’s name or the exhibition. There are eight different weights of this typeface, so my initial concept is to combine each of them with the planets in our solar system. Universe has always been a perfect theme that allows me to tell compelling stories, and thanks for NASA providing amazing images for everyone.
