Unlike many traditional Yunnan restaurants in Shanghai, Huma sought to reinterpret this culinary heritage through a contemporary lens. This concept is reflected in both the dining experience and the interior design. I was commissioned to create the restaurant's typographic identity with one specific requirement: it should feel neither trendy nor traditional. After extensive research into classical Chinese calligraphy, I chose Official Script (Lishu, 隶书) as my primary inspiration. The character Niao (鸟), meaning "bird," is an uncommon choice for a given name, and throughout his life people have often asked about the story behind it. For this exhibition, Tong chose the reversal of his name as the central concept, paired with his signature self-portrait. Tong's work is often described as camp in style, characterized by a deliberate tension between harmony and disruption. In response, I arranged the three Chinese characters repeatedly in alternating order across the background, allowing viewers to interpret them as either the artist's name or the exhibition title. With eight distinct weights in the typeface family, I developed a concept that pairs each weight with one of the planets in our solar system. The universe has always fascinated me as a source of visual storytelling, and NASA's publicly available imagery provided the perfect foundation for the project.
